Climb early, leave the crowds

Arrive before mid-morning to reach Sacré-Cœur and the Place du Tertre before the heaviest crowds. The light and the calm are both better early.

Wander the back lanes

The quieter streets behind the basilica — vineyards, the village squares, and stairways — are the real Montmartre. Let yourself get a little lost away from the main viewpoint.

Mind the scams and steps

Politely refuse friendship-bracelet approaches near the steps, watch your bag in crowds, and use the funicular if the climb is too much.
